‘Lee Se-dol’ teacher Kwon Gap-yong, 9th Dan, dies at the age of 66

9th Dan Lee Sedol (retired) and Kwon Gab-yong, 9th Dan, who trained many professional players, passed away on the 23rd from a chronic disease. He is 66 years old.

Kwon, 9th dan, who joined as a professional knight in 1975, opened the ‘Kwon Gab-yong Baduk Academy’ in 1982 and devoted his energy to nurturing the younger generation. In 1989, his pupil Park Seung-moon, 8th dan, passed the entrance competition and produced about 50 professional players. Among the disciples of the deceased, eight world champions were born: Lee Se-dol, Won Seong-jin, Choi Cheol-han, Baek Hong-seok, Kang Dong-yoon, Kim Ji-seok, Park Jeong-hwan, and Yoon Young-seon. Kwon, 9th Dan, along with his daughter, Kwon Hyo-jin, 7th Dan, were also named Korea’s No. 1 “Women’s Professional Engineer”.

The deceased received the Special Achievement Award at the 1993 Go Culture Awards in recognition of his contribution to producing a large number of disciples. His survivors include his wife Park Ok-joo and two daughters Hyo-jin and Hyo-yeong.
