According to ESPN on the 14th, the Washington team signed a multi-year extension with general manager Rizzo, whose contract ends this year. The specific contract period and conditions were not disclosed.

General Manager Rizzo ascended to the position of general manager in March 2009 and has been in charge of the Washington team’s household affairs for 15 years. During General Manager Rizzo’s tenure, Washington won the National League (NL) Eastern Division four times and reached the top of the World Series in the 2019 season.

However, starting with the 2020 season, it remained in last place in the NL East Division for three consecutive years until last year. This season, they have recorded 65 wins and 80 losses as of today, and are unable to get out of last place. This is due to the fact that a large number of key players were let go at the time of winning in 2019 and rebuilding work began.

Washington lost special pitcher Max Scherzer and All-Star shortstop Trey Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2021 season and brought in four prospects. Key fielder Anthony Rendon became a free agent after the 2019 season and left for the Los Angeles Angels, and Juan Soto also rejected Washington’s offer to stay and went to the San Diego Padres in a trade last year.

Director Rizzo looked back and said, “There were losses, but it was a worthwhile investment for the next 8 to 10 years,” and added, “I want to overcome the difficult rebuilding period and achieve good results.”
